VENICE, Calif. — Director Dana Vespoli is set to release her latest film, “Girl/Boy,” from Evil Angel this week.
The film is described as a sexual-psychological adventure exploring gender identity — or, rather, a complete lack of traditional identification.
“Girl/Boy came about because of Jiz Lee,” Vespoli, said. “Jiz is neither a ‘she’ nor a ‘’he.’ Jiz is Jiz, and refuses to be identified by gender pronouns, or be recognized as female or male. It forces people to think when they address Jiz, and this raised a question for me: How do we self identify? Do we leave it up to society, or do we demand society recognize us on our own terms? I have an enormous amount of admiration for Jiz, who chooses the latter.”
Vespoli said many aspects of transgression including power, class, and genders have long fascinated her.
“After speaking at length with Jiz I wanted to make a movie that explores gender transgression. In my college years I'd had boyfriends who would cross-dress for me, and I would do the same for them. I revisit this in the movie with Danny Wylde and Veruca James. There is an amazing DP with Ramon Nomar, Valentina Nappi and me as the other 'male’ character,” Vespoil, said.
She added, “This movie is incredibly special to me, and very personal. It made me feel both nostalgic for my college years, and excited about the future, as I see performers like Jiz and Danny Wylde as the future of this industry: thoughtful, intelligent, sexy risk-takers.”

Vespoli noted that she will be appearing on a Streamate CelebShow on 12 and 1 p.m. PST on Oct. 13.
