Seoul Sexpo, which grew out of the 10-year-old Australian Sexpo, features seminars on sex, exhibits for sex toys, strips shows, a lingerie fashion show, a nude photo zone and kissing competitions.
Models from Hustler and several Penthouse Pets made the trip to Korea to help promote the event.
“This event will focus on educational programs, rather than the sensational exposure of sex and provide sex education,'' an organizer said.
But according to the Korean Women’s Associations United (KWAU), which has asked the Seoul city government to stop the event, the show presents a misogynistic agenda disguised as education.
“Sexpo is organized from a man's point of view only,” KWAU director Shin Yeon-sook said. “That kind of event is not helpful for right and sound sex education.”
According to Yeon-sook, the show could be improved by dealing with issues of sexual dysfunction, as well as gay and lesbian sexuality.
According to Kim Jong-min, an official with the Seoul Metropolitan government, the show, which was postponed in July due to obscene displays and a transgender beauty contest, will go on as planned.
“We agree with the event organizers that they will obey all the laws, and in case they violate them, we will stop all the events,'' Jong-min said.
If the Seoul Sexpo goes off without a hitch, organizers said they plan to hold a similar event in Pusan, Korea.
Seoul Sexpo is scheduled to run from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3.
