LOS ANGELES — "Kink," a documentary on San Francisco-based fetish studio Kink.com, held its world premiere Saturday at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
The film is directed by Christina Voros ("127 Hours: An Extraordinary View") and co-produced by actor James Franco ("127 Hours") through his production company Rabbit Bandini.
Voros and Franco spoke with LATimes.com about "kink" and the producers and performers whose work and personalities it documents.
“They are looking for ways, just as we are when we make a fictional feature film, to be innovative… to find the next level,” Franco said.
“There are a lot of videos they do that are not that far from the things that certain performance artists have done. It’s just next to art — it’s just that their frame is one of pornography.”
Franco tells the Times that while "kink" is an intense movie for audiences to watch, he's curious to see how they will react in the post "Fifty Shades" world.
“Everybody likes to talk about [sex], but when you put it on film it’s somehow different,” Franco said. “I was thinking at that moment [of the premiere]: ‘All the Fifty Shades of Grey’ readers? This is what you’re reading about! This is it, so don’t be offended, because this is the real thing.' ”
