SAN FRANCISCO — Apple announced its new iPhone 5 today, upping the maker's Retina display screen size to 4 inches from the 3.7-inch display its predecessor models had.
The enlargement permits a fifth row of app icons on the home screen but the screen continues to be smaller than many rival Android devices.
It's lighter, thinner and faster, too. The iPhone 5 checks in one-fifth lighter than the 4S and about 18 percent thinner; it runs off an A6 chip processor and gets about eight hours of 3G talk time off its battery.
iPhone 5 has an improved iSight camera that Apple says increases performance in low light and can capture pictures 40 percent faster than before. It also now has three microphones and better speakers.
