ICANN to Reveal New gTLDs on Wednesday

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — ICANN tomorrow will reveal the contents of nearly 2,000 applications for new generic top-level domains.

Currently, companies can register for sites on just 22 gTLDs such as .com, .org, .biz, .tv, .fm and so on. But next year, the new gTLDs will go live, expanding the brand potential for companies that pay the $185,000 entry fee.

Of the 2000 applications, only a handful have been publicly revealed. Below is a list of some of the gTLDs we do know about.

.ADULT, .PORN, .SEX:  ICM Registry, the .XXX operator, has placed orders for the three gTLDs.

.CASA: Domain name registrar Go Daddy has bet on this name.

.CLOUD: The operator, Cloud Names, says businesses and individuals will be able to have their own cloud on the Internet. Likewise, a .global domain will allow businesses to secure a position on an international level.

.DESIGN: Momentus said it wants to create an online space for designers of all disciplines to communicate and collaborate.

.DOCS: Google has filed an application for the extension.

.PHARMACY: The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy has applied to own and operate the new gTLD.

.RIP: Ottawa, Canada-based Momentus wants to build a place where you can build memorials to people, brands and products no longer with us.

.ROCKS: Arkansas-based DotRocks LLC placed an order for this extension.

.STYLE: Momentus says the gTLD is for consumers, entrepreneurs and institutions committed to adding style to daily life.

.SUCKS: Momentus wants to provide a medium for sharing opinions and encouraging debate.

.WORLD: RadixRegistry is wagering on this gTLD.
