NEW YORK — Same-sex marriage may be a hot-button issue in America, but in the Marvel Comics universe, where men wear tights and fancy masks to fight crime and/or plot world destruction, it’s as common as having family slain before one's very eyes.
Northstar, a Canadian member of the X-Men and one of Marvel's first openly gay superheroes, will marry longtime life partner Kyle Jinadu in Marvel's upcoming book "Astonishing X-Men: No. 51."
Northstar, AKA Jean-Paul Beaubier, first came out as a gay man in "Alpha Flight: No. 106," released in 1992.
"The Marvel Universe has always reflected the world outside your window," Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso told BostonHerald.com. "We strive to make sure our characters, relationships and stories are grounded in that reality."
Northstar, whose powers include flight and super human agility and speed, will tie the knot with Jinadu, his Team Northstar Extreme Snowsports manager, in New York City. According to writer Marjorie Liu, he will pop the question in "Astonishing X-Men: No. 50," scheduled to street on Wednesday.
"Astonishing X-Men: No. 51" comes out June 20.
