Good Vibrations Set to Open Antique Vibrator Museum

SAN FRANCISCO — The history of the vibrator will be on display as Good Vibrations opens its Antique Vibrator Museum on April 12 from 6-8 p.m.

The museum showcases collectibles from the 1800’s and onward.

Curator and staff sexologist Dr. Carol Queen will lead a tour of the museum and discuss the origins and evolution of the vibrator at the reception.

Queen explained, “We are delighted to showcase our collection in a dynamic, historic, and entertaining display at our Polk Street retail location. The new exhibit contextualizes the vibrators’ role in society and highlights how our attitudes around sex and female pleasure have evolved.”

She added, “It really gives us an appreciation for how far both society and technology have come, and it’s fitting to house the exhibit in the original female-friendly adult retail store.”

Good Vibrations said it is also co-presenting the new Hollywood film “Hysteria,” starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rupert Everett set around the creation of the vibrator at its premiere as part of the S.F. International Film Festival on May 1 at Sundance Theatres Kabuki in San Francisco.

Those on the east coast can see a few select antique vibrators up close at Boston University’s production of “In the Next Room: The Vibrator Play,” a period drama that also uses the invention of the vibrator as a catalyst for the story.

Having supported the production in Berkeley, Good Vibrations will help kick off the production by Boston University’s Stage Troupe on April 12 with a display and raffle of more contemporary items.

Highlights of the collection from the late 1800’s up through the 1970’s can be seen online at AntiqueVibratorMuseum.com along with an extensive history of their development and marketing.

The Museum is located at 1620 Polk Street in San Francisco. After the grand opening on April 12, the Museum will be open during store hours at the Good Vibrations Polk Street Store.
