Germans Ditch Porn to Accommodate Saudi Guests

BAD NAUHEIM, Germany — When the Saudi Arabian national soccer team visits Germany in May for the World Cup, the cultural differences won’t be quite as pronounced. The resort town just north of Frankfurt will make the Saudis feel at home by shielding them from porn and other Western no-nos.

Few countries are as liberal about porn, sex and nudity as Germany. But at the Hotel Dolce Bad Nauheim, which will host the Saudi team, the Germany that Germans and the rest of the world have come to know will cease to exist during the tournament.

“To avoid all problems, all women staffers are going to wear trousers instead of dresses,” Michael Prokop, the hotel’s general manager, said. “We are also planning to make some adjustments to the Pay-TV channels and contents of the small room refrigerators. We'll leave the Pay-TV on in their rooms, but the porn movie channels will of course be turned off. All the alcohol will be removed from the mini bars and replaced with soft drinks.”

According to Prokop, even images not considered pornographic will have to go before the Saudis arrive.

“We do have a photo exhibition in the pool area which shows a lot of skin, and it goes without saying that it will be removed by then,” Prokop said. “There are 20 tasteful portrait photos, but out of courtesy there will be no skin and no breasts.”
