While Hustler is new to the gonzo field, it sees the delay as a chance to do some homework on the competition.
“I’ve researched a lot of these gonzo films,” Drew Rosenfeld, creative director for Hustler and VCA, told XBIZ. “A lot of gonzo films are about a girl and a few guys in the room, no real production value. We want the same gonzo feel of extreme sex, but it has to look good. It has to meet our standards of phenomenal camera work, phenomenal lighting and a high-quality look.”
To get its gonzo line off the ground, Hustler has tapped the likes of Sandra Romain, Barbara Summer and Annie Cruz.
“The girls in our gonzo line are really special,” Rosenfeld said . “They’re great, nasty performers who are willing to do double-anal, double-vaginal and blow-bangs, but they also take a really nice pretty girl shot. We’re making sure that we’re using the right girls for this, because only a handful of women do it well.”
While girls are the key to selling the films, Rosenfeld was quick to point out that male performers add something extra to the genre.
“We hired guys like Marco and Steve Holmes because they really drive the scene, that’s important in gonzo,” Rosenfeld said.
Rosenfeld also praised the importance of the directors that will be making Hustler gonzos, among them, Chance, Rob Rotten and Nikki Hunter.
“Directors don’t have to perform in the scene, it’s up to them,” Rosenfeld said. “[Even if they don’t perform] viewers will be aware of their presence; directors will give commentary, and you might see their hands come into the scene if the action really excites them.”
Rosenfeld added that another key to success in the gonzo market are great titles. The company plans to release its first, “Anal Extremes,” on April 18 under the Hardline label. Future label titles will include: “Cum Swallowers,” “Cum Swappers” and “Strollin’ in the Colon.”
