Christian Coalition to Boycott South African Porn Channel

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — A coalition of Christian organizations is planning to boycott South Africa’s TopTV satellite channel, after the company announced it would launch 24-hour porn.

The Family Policy Institute — the main group behind the move — said it will target the station's advertisers and sponsors.

Six Christian organizations have also joined the effort including the Evangelical Alliance of South Africa and the Methodist Church of South Africa.

Errol Naidoo, the Institute’s director told TimesLive, "The Christian denominations and church affiliations support the view that the broadcasting of hardcore pornography on television degrades and objectifies women and exposes children to harmful content.

"Millions of Christians will be encouraged to join the mass boycott of TopTV by not paying their subscription fees and canceling their contracts with the pay channel."

Last week, TopTV announced that Playboy TV would be supplying the content for the new channels after the company submitted its application to the South African Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), the local regulator.

Psat, a French-based porn producer run by African Satellite Installations (ASI) is also making a bid to broadcast porn, but has been faced with pushback from TopTV over use of TopTV’s satellite dish.

"Christian citizens are sick and tired of the moral decay in society. The sexual degradation of women and children fuelled by pornography contributes significantly to the rape and sexual abuse of women and children in South Africa," Naidoo said.
