Vivid, which worked with CinemaNow’s AllAdultChannel to launch the service, will be the first adult studio offering a complete DVD that you can download and own.
"As soon as [All Adult Channel] was able to get the DRM in place, they had something that really interested us," Vivid CEO Steven Hirsch told Wired News. "We expect the service to be extremely popular. Just hit the button, download and burn. And then you can do whatever you like with it. It's a way of making it portable.
“We're content producers, and we want many different avenues to get our movies out there," he said.
To start, Vivid will be selling 30 titles through the service, all in standard-definition DVD quality. High-definition videos will become available in the future, as the company shoots about 80 percent of its new content in HD, Hirsch said.
Marina Del Rey, Calif,’s AllAdultChannel also has lined up Red Light District for the service, which offers proprietary software with the downloads that have built-in digital rights management code.
AllAdultChannel’s DVD by download service charges approximately the same for feature videos, and includes the same menu system, chapter navigation and other interactive features included with the original.
Consumers also can print the jacket art, but the jewel case is on their dime.
