BERN, Switzerland — The Swiss government will not be implementing additional copyright infringement legislation, saying that consumers who pirate content tend to spend that saved money on other entertainment expenses.
The government’s Department of Intellectual Property said it completed a report that addressed the question of whether additional measures were needed to combat copyright infringement.
The report found that while some content creators have claimed a decline in revenues, others acknowledged that revenues remained stable, PCMag.com reported.
Even though the government recognized that many of its citizens downloaded content, many citizens also bought various forms of entertainment.
The government argued that additional copyright legislation would make sense if it preserved the economic benefit of content. In Switzerland and the Netherlands, sales of movie tickets remained constant between 1999 and 2007, showing that consumers continued to spend money and there was no need for further copyright legislation.
