Google Releases Native Gmail App

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google rolled out its native Gmail app for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices running iOS 4.0 and higher.

“We’ve combined your favorite features from the Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go,” Google said in a blog post.

“It’s designed to be fast, efficient and take full advantage of the touchscreen and notification capabilities of your device.”

The company said it included some time-saving features such as new message alerts with push notifications and sounds, an email search that scours the entire inbox, autocomplete email addresses from Gmail contacts or address book, photo uploads with a click using the new attachment button in compose view, and a split view allowing iPad users to navigate and read mail simultaneously.

“The new Gmail app helps organize your mail so you don’t have to go wading through your inbox to find that key message from your boss or loved one,” the company said.

Google also is bringing Priority Inbox to its Gmail iOS app, which moves the most important messages up top. Users can also archive, label, star, delete, and report spam from the app.

Google also promised a touch-optimized experience. "Pull down your inbox to rapidly refresh if you're eager for new mail, swipe right to view your labels without ever leaving your inbox, [and] swiftly scroll through dozens of emails just by sliding your finger," Google said.

The app is available now in the App Store.
