Italian Porn Star Runs for Mayor

ROME – In a sweeping return to the Italian political scene, former porn star Ilona Staller, also known as "Cicciolina," is running for mayor of the Northern Italian city of Monza.

According to reports, the actress is best known for baring her breasts in public and was the first to do so on Italian television.

No stranger to the peculiar mixture of porn and politics, Staller was elected to the Italian parliament in 1987 for the Lazio district of Rome. However, at the end of her term, she was not re-elected.

Born Anna Elena Staller in Budapest, the 54-year-old actress began her career working as a model and a hotel maid until she found her true calling through a radio show called "Voulez vous coucher avec moi?" on Italia’s Radio Luna.

From there, Staller appeared in a handful of films in the 1970s, and from 1975 until the end of her porn career in 1989, she starred in films as herself and became a personality actress, which she eventually parlayed into a career as a politician.

Staller first got a taste for politics with Italy’s Green Party in 1985 and then switched over to a more radical political group that opposed nuclear energy.

Staller is most famous for offering to sleep with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to “achieve peace in the Middle East.”

Local Italian press have quoted her as saying that as mayor of Monza, she vows to build a casino and Disneyland park in place of a local historical landmark, in addition to putting Monza on the world map.

"Everyone knows my name, and so people will come to Monza to see me because I am famous, and that will bring lots of money to the city," Staller said. "I won't be getting my tits out because it's not about them this time, it's about more serious issues.”
