The new player is Mac compatible and allows visitors to stream more than 50,000 movies. Both sites also offer a Windows Media player option.
"The Mac market is growing and we want to ensure that these visitors are able to seamlessly watch any video on demand movie on our sites,” SugarDVD CEO Jax Smith said. “Silverlight will allow us to provide streaming movies to a larger audience."
The new Silverlight player features a full-screen mode, bit rate controls and scene toggling. The sites automatically load the new Silverlight player when a Mac user makes a VOD movie request and the Windows Media player loads by default when a PC user makes a movie request.
The company said it plans to further upgrade the player in the fall with additional features like scene tagging and bookmarks.
Microsoft's Silverlight is a development platform that allows for rich media applications and business applications for the Internet, desktop and mobile devices.
Silverlight is a free plugin powered by the .NET framework and is compatible across multiple browsers, devices and operating systems, including Macs.
