The original 1977 movie from Essex Video was helmed by the late Anthony Spinelli and starred Kay Parker and Annette Haven, with a cast of male performers that included Johnnie Keyes, Joey Silvera and John Leslie.
Myers, who directed the 2010 XBIZ People’s Choice Parody of the Year Award-winner, “The Office: A XXX Parody,” for New Sensations, said “SexWorld” is his “favorite porno movie of all time.”
“So it’s kind of my dream gig,” Myers told XBIZ. “I think Spinelli did a great job shooting it and telling a story out of something that’s almost a vignette movie. So it’s a vignette movie with a story arc.”
Myers, who is also writing the script, said his version is “loosely based on its source material, ‘Westworld,’ which is also one of my favorite movies.”
“Westworld” is the 1973 sci-fi thriller that starred Yul Brynner and was written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton.
Like the original “SexWorld,” Myers wants his remake to be “funny and dramatic and sci-fi at the same time.”
He said he also believes “SexWorld” was “a great commentary on sexual freedom and sexual expression.”
The director plans to cast the movie next week after he finishes shooting his stomach-turning parody “The Human Sex-ipede” for Tom Byron Pictures this weekend.
“Right now I’m just cleaning up the script a little bit and breaking everything down. People hold ‘Sex World’ very closely so I do not want to screw this one up at all,” Myers said. “So I’m not taking any chances. I’m being very careful with going through the script one last time.”
VCX President David Sutton said that parodies of mainstream titles were “the bread and butter of VCX for years.”
“SexWorld” has performed well for VCX ever since the Las Vegas-based company acquired it from Essex, Sutton noted.
“It’s always been one of our better sellers on DVD,” he said. “It’s kind of a movie that is perfect for showing a progression of where this is now compared to how it was done in ’77.”
Sutton pointed out that when the original was shot there were not many computers around with which to decorate the high-tech set.
“Now we can load up a room with computers, editing equipment, monitors, security equipment and everything else. It’s perfect and probably a lot more economical to produce that title now than when the original was shot. So we’re excited about that,” Sutton said.
He added that he and Myers have discussed collaborating on new movies for some time, and “obviously I’m a big fan of the work he did for New Sensations.”
“I have a great deal of respect for his skills in terms of production,” Sutton said. “He gets it done right.”
