Apple Releases iOS 4.0.1

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple has rolled out iOS 4.0.1, a new version of its iOS operating system, which the company says will fix iPhone 4’s antenna issues.

PCMag reports Apple previously blamed the iPhone 4’s antenna issues on software, but the company now says the new update takes care of that, fixing at least one issue.

“Improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display,” the company said.

The update makes the signal bars in the top left corner of the iPhone screen slightly bigger, so it is easier to tell what the reception is.

Initial testing showed that the iPhone 4's signal fluctuated more than it had previously, which supposedly shows a more accurate representation of AT&T service.

Apple has blamed the reception issue, which many have called the “death grip,” on software problems not hardware. But independent testing by antenna consultants confirm that the issue did stem from hardware.

iOS 4.0.1 is compatible with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

On Friday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced during a news conference that the company will give free protective cases to buyers of its latest iPhone to alleviate the so-called "death grip" problem.

More than 3 million people who have already bought the iPhone 4 and new buyers through Sept. 30 will all be eligible.

People who already purchased the $29 "Bumper" cases will be refunded.
