Schmidt is the medical director of the Sexual Behaviors Unit at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Stagliano attorneys last month gave notice that they intend on calling several expert witnesses to the stand when trial begins, including Dr. Constance Penley, Dr. Marty Kline, Dr. Christine Y. Henny, Dr. Lawrence I. Sank and Dr. William A. Fisher.
Schmidt, who has written hundreds of journal publications, chapter and abstracts, specializes in psychiatry as it relates to sexual health and dysfunction.
Some of the papers have focused on sexual disorders as it relates to personalities to sexual functioning of transvestitic fetishists to psychological subtypes of anorgasmia (delayed ejaculation in males).
He also has been tapped as an expert witness in numerous cases, involving psychosexual issues and behaviors.
Several years ago in a federal appeals case Schmidt gave expert testimony for the government regarding his opinion that sex reassignment surgery and related treatment underwent is elective treatment and not medically necessary.
The case, involving application of federal discrimination law to transsexuals, relied on Schmidt's testimony that gender identity disorder and sexual identity are not rooted in biology, but in behavior, preference and choice.
Schmidt did not return XBIZ calls and emails for comment on the upcoming Stagliano trial, which is expected to last two weeks, beginning in Washington on July 7.
Stagliano and his companies — Evil Angel Productions Inc. and John Stagliano Inc. — are charged with seven counts for illegal possession, distribution and sale of two videos sent through the mail — "Milk Nymphos" and "Storm Squirters 2 'Target Practice'" — and a trailer of "Fetish Fanatic Chapter 5" shown on the Internet.
Stagliano faces a maximum of 32 years in jail and $7 million in fines if convicted on all counts.
