“We are so happy to be able to celebrate the makers of feminist porn because they are too frequently overlooked by the big studios and larger distribution,” Alison Lee, the event’s organizer, told XBIZ. “By creating this event, we are honoring their work, as well as encouraging audiences to seek out these great movies.”
The Feminist Porn Awards, hosted by adult boutique retailer Good For Her, will be presented April 8-9 in Toronto.
The two-day event kicks off April 8 with the event Provocative.Public.Porn: The Year’s Best in Feminist Film, which will include a screening of selected clips and a roundtable discussion with directors and performers, including Tristan Taormino and Shine Louis Houston, among others.
During the event, audience members also will have the chance to vote in the Audience Choice category to be presented the following day at the Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards ceremony.
“We are looking forward to our biggest and best year yet,” Lee said. “That an event like this has grown so much over the years, and the level of response that we’ve had from both the larger porn industry — from DVD companies, producers, directors and performers — as well as our audience means a lot to us.”
Categories for the awards include: Canadian Content, Diverse Cast/Representation, Emerging Filmmaker, Independent, International, Kink/Fetish, Lesbian/Dyke, Short Film, Straight, Trans and Web-Based, with more to be added.
Performers in feminist adult titles also may be considered, Lee said.
“We do our best to honor performers in the world of feminist porn as without them, there would be no feminist porn,” she said. “We are also very open to honoring websites, so we just need to wait and see what gets submitted.”
To be considered for a Feminist Porn Award, submissions must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- A woman had a hand in the production, writing, direction etc. of the work.
- The work depicts genuine female pleasure
- The work expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film, challenges stereotypes and presents a vision that sets the content apart from most mainstream pornography
Four DVD screener copies of each work to be considered should be mailed to:

“Feminist porn is important for so many reasons,” Lee said. “One of the most important reasons that I see is that its porn that actually addresses the fact that women watch porn too and it’s creating something that women want to watch, either with their partners or on their own. Lots of women enjoy mainstream pornography, but it’s nice to see something where the female gaze is taken into account as well, and to watch movies that truly and honestly focus on female pleasure and a range of sexual expression.”
