Droid vs. iPhone Comparison Highlights Strengths of Both Devices

LOS ANGELES — After the launch of Motorola’s would-be iPhone killer Droid, tech experts are asking, which is better?

MobileCrunch.com offered extensive analysis on both devices, comparing their power at taking pictures, shooting video, surfing the web and other common activities for mobile devices.

But it wasn’t a clear win for either phone, as analyst Greg Kumparak stressed that both devices have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Adult industry members should be interested in a comparison between the two devices still cameras, in which Kumparak ruled in favor of the iPhone’s camera. Not only does the iPhone take better pictures, but an unreliable auto-focusing system hampers the Droid, which (unlike the iPhone) includes a flash.

“More times than I care to count, I’ve seen the Droid auto-focus, lock on as clear as day for about half a second, and then immediately blur,” he said. “This happens at short range, at long range, at medium range. It’s just really, really bad at focusing. This can presumably be fixed in a software update, so all hope is not lost.”

Kumparak also compared the devices’ competing web browsers. He praised the iPhone’s ability to render pages “pixel perfect” as well as the device’s intuitive “pinch” method of zooming in on pages.

One area where the Droid triumphed was with its inclusion of a physical keyboard. Kumparak criticized onscreen keyboards as cumbersome and inaccurate, though he gave Apple’s device the nod for being able to “guess” what he was trying to type more often than not.

When it came to video quality, Kumparak more or less called it a draw.

Overall, Kumparak praised both devices while he inadvertently draw a comparison between the old struggle between Apple users (who prefer hermetically sealed, pre-packaged devices) and PC users (who like to customize their own engines).

“If you want a phone that just works and does damned near everything you could want and don’t mind Apple’s closed garden: by all means, get the iPhone,” he said. “If you can handle a bit of complexity for the sake of flexibility and don’t mind having to tinker a bit: by all means, get the Droid. At this point, I honestly feel that either choice would make any sane person incredibly happy.”
