“Based on everything we read, see and hear these days, we were expecting to find Americans admitting to losing their virginity at an earlier age,” said Katy Zvolerin, Adam & Eve director of public relations. “The numbers hold firm, however. The average American male (over 31 percent) and female (30 percent) admit to having their first sexual experience at age 17 or 18.”
The survey revealed that 25 percent of males and 30 percent of females lost their virginity at 15 or 16 years of age, and 20 percent of males and 18 percent of females waited until they were 18 to 21.
Rounding out the survey were 14 percent of males and 13 percent of females who said they were 14 or younger their first time, while 7 percent of the males and females waited until they were older than 22. The web-based survey studied more than 1,000 American adults age 18 and up was sponsored by Adam & Eve to study sexual preferences and practices.
