LeaseWeb Doubles Bandwidth Capacity Across All Sites

AMSTERDAM — Web hosting company LeaseWeb.com has increased its bandwidth capacity from 500 to 750 gigabits per second.

LeaseWeb Managing Director Con Zwinkels said that the proliferation of streaming video online prompted his company to make the move.

“We have recently seen a strong increase in the use of streaming video in web environments,” he said. “Video is a key factor in the growth of Internet traffic handled by our network. In addition, we’re seeing a continuous flow of new clients from the Netherlands, but particularly from other countries, who have come to appreciate LeaseWeb’s qualities and competitive price-quality ratio. To give you an idea, we are currently managing approximately 22,000 servers and we’re adding about 300 servers each month. This growth is significant.”

According to Zwinkels, the average amount of Internet traffic calls for about 375 gigabits per second.

“Maintaining ample bandwidth is a conscious choice," he said. "Our double bandwidth capacity is one of the main reasons why companies with rapidly expanding web environments choose LeaseWeb.”

In March, LeaseWeb joined forces with the Dutch Ministry of Justice, the Dutch Child Porn Hotline and the Swedish company NetClean to implement a child porn filter on all of its sites.

LeaseWeb uses hash technology to find and remove the offending sites. Typically, hash technology is used to encrypt sensitive information, but LeaseWeb intends to use it as a new way to detect child porn.

LeaseWeb security officer Alex de Joode said that the usual methods for fighting child porn weren't enough.

“In our network in 2007 however we noticed an increase of the amount of reports regarding child porn images,” he said. “Reports which were mainly caused by so-called upload websites, websites like Flickr. On these websites users can bring images online without the interference of website administrators.”
