TLA Releasing Changes Strategy, Reduces Staff

PHILADELPHIA — With a focus on more than 200 cataloged titles, TLA Releasing is reorganizing its U.S. operations to make itself more streamlined and competitive.

The company plans to sell or license its library of gay, horror and international titles for DVD, TV and VOD. TLA also will enter into a strategic partnership to help support the release of some of its newest production efforts, including the movies "Chef’s Special," "Shank" and "Redwoods."

TLA Releasing Head of Production and Development Derek Curl said that his company decided to make the changes based on the difficult economic climate.

“It is an exciting time to re-imagine TLA Releasing in the marketplace, not only as distributors but also as a micro-studio,” he said. “We believe that our 4th quarter releasing slate is a strong lineup that will reaffirm the company’s worldwide brand name as a leader in gay cinema.”

The company's other divisions, which include TLA Releasing UK, TLAVideo.com and TLA Video retail stores, won't be affected.

TLA President Raymond Murray added that the old ways just weren't working.

“People’s entertainment viewing habits are rapidly changing and the previous structure of a large organization doing production, post-production, authoring, advertising, warehousing and sales in-house was a model which does not work in today’s market,” he said.

As a part of the restructuring, TLA has laid off two of its 17 staff members.
