LeaseWeb Becomes VMware Service Provider Partner

AMSTERDAM — Virtualization software provider Vmware and European business hosting provider LeaseWeb have signed a strategic cooperation agreement.

The agreement will allow LeaseWeb clients to rent rather than buy VMware software for their web environments. The cooperation between VMware and LeaseWeb will be handled through the VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP), which permits a select number of hosting providers to supply licenses for virtual servers on the basis of periodic rental agreements. LeaseWeb clients will receive easier access to virtualized hosting and greater flexibility in its use.

“This cooperation will allow us to provide our hosting clients with virtualized dedicated servers in a quick and scalable manner,” said Con Zwinkels, LeaseWeb managing director. “LeaseWeb clients will have the ability to pay their licensing fees periodically, ‘by virtual server by month.’ Thus, they will no longer have to make costly startup investments for virtualized hosting. The partnership program will make it much easier for our clients to switch to a virtualized hosting environment.”

The use of periodic rental agreements also will add flexibility to virtualized hosting solutions.

“This will allow our clients to quickly adapt their web infrastructure to their current needs," Zwinkells said. "It will make their web infrastructure highly scalable and eliminate the hassle of having to deal with complex licensing models. The ability to rent also improves the efficiency of virtualized hosting environments. Clients only pay for actual use.”

LeaseWeb has developed a VMware-based virtualization platform, which is aimed at web environments in the enterprise market and for small- and medium-size businesses.

“A virtualized hosting environment based on VMware can offer significant advantages,” Zwinkels said. “VMware is state of the art virtualization software. The design of the VMware platform on which the virtual server runs provides a high level of scalability and availability of the web environment. Migrating virtual dedicated servers to other servers is also much simpler, and it will not affect the applications.”

LeaseWeb’s virtualization platform and other hosting services will be demonstrated at the VMworld Europe 2009 in Cannes, France, from Feb. 24-26. LeaseWeb is one of the sponsors of the vCloud pavilion in the Palais des Festivals, along with Cisco, Intel, Logica, Atos Origin and other companies.
