LG to Display New 'Broadband HDTVs' at CES

LAS VEGAS — LG Electronics and mainstream video rental company Netflix have announced that LG will release HDTV models that can stream Netflix content directly from the Internet without the aid of external hardware.

The "Broadband HDTVs," which will be available for sale this spring in both LCD and plasma form, will displayed this week during the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Korea-based LG was among the first to introduce a Netflix-compatible set-top box to the market, a hybrid Netflix/Blu-ray player, in July.

"Embedding the Netflix streaming software in the television is a natural progression of our partnership with Netflix and our innovative product line," LG Electronics USA President Teddy Hwang said in a statement. "This is an LG industry first, which provides another flexible option for consumers seeking to access exciting content directly through their HDTV."

According to LG, the Broadband HDTVs will require an Internet connection and will sport a "queue-based" user interface. Users can add programs online through Netflix, and also can browse and make selections directly from the couch with the help of a handy remote control, in addition to being able to fast-forward and rewind the video stream.

LG has not yet announced pricing of the new HDTVs.

The LG booth at the Consumer Electronics Show is located at the Las Vegas Convention Center Central Hall, No. 8214.
