Sony Rolls Out PlayStation Portable Upgrade

FOSTER CITY, Calif. — Sony Computer Entertainment America announced a new firmware upgrade Wednesday for its PlayStation Portable (PSP) system. Sony executives say the firmware 2.0 upgrade will add an Internet browser, increase wireless security on the unit, as well as offer additional photo sharing and video options.

PSPs have made big headlines in the adult entertainment industry lately, as more sites are offering adult downloads tailored specifically for portable systems.

Many adult sites consider PSPs the secret to getting their content into the hands of tech savvy 21-35 year olds. M Squared, one such service recently profiled by XBiz, offers 50 categories of video-on-demand for the PSP, as well as a host of picture downloads. Other mobile services include OhMobile, MobileBabes and Xobile.

“We have many plans to exploit this and future buyer upgrades,” M Squared COO Allen Ingram told Xbiz. “In fact I already have the PSP upgrade on my own machine. I got it from a Korean update given out a couple months back.”

Last year, analysts at The Yankee Group released a study predicting a $1 billion global market for mobile porn by 2008. The biggest hindrance to the market, they said, would be video quality, something Sony, as well as its competitors, have continually improved upon.

Sony’s latest upgrade adds support for MP4 and WAV formats, as well as enhanced audio. Users also can transfer images between two PSP units using infrared technology. The upgrade can be downloaded directly to a PSP system using a Wi-Fi connection from Playstation’s website.

Since its launch in March 2005, Sony has sold nearly 2 million PSPs in North America alone.
