Romeo And Juliet
The most unusual thing about director Lee Roy Myers’ version is his use of snatches of Shakespearean English, usually from the play, mixed with colloquial American. At times the effect is almost comic. (“Get rid of the gun and get outta here. Hence begone!”)What the production gets right is the lovers’ chemistry. Preston and Reed have an unadorned innocence that makes their love convincing.
Their first sex scene, preceded by a few lines from the play, seems to be the way this couple would actually have fucked for the first time. They’re quite touching together. Chanel in particular has a spring-like freshness and naturalness that’s very winning.
Anthony Rosano plays the fiery Tybalt, whose death at Romeo’s hand triggers the tragedy — even though the ending seems more perfunctory than tragic. It might have worked better if the characters had a chance to develop and if the story weren’t telescoped to fit a porn-standard running time. Still, it’s a heartfelt hardcore tribute to the world’s most enduring love story.
