Hi, everyone! For those of you who don’t know who I am, you must really suck at the internet. Chances are, if you’re “porn-friendly” and have a Twitter account, you’ve come across a few (or thousands) of my tweets. I’m Missy Martinez and I’ve been a porn actress and incessant Twitter user for 10 years. There’s nothing in particular that drastically sets me apart from the other ladies in the adult business except my Twitter account. I tweet not only to promote my scenes, but I also utilize my comedy background to elicit smiles and offer mental health encouragement to my followers.
Twitter is an excellent tool for marketing, networking and self-exploitation. I’ve helped turn a silly time-wasting app on my phone into a cult following and it’s helped keep me visible and fresh in fans’ minds for a decade. I pepper in scene promotion with comedy, social awareness and motivation. Making people laugh and making people orgasm are the two greatest things you can do for another person in my book.
Twitter is an excellent tool for marketing, networking and self-exploitation.
I see performers, even huge-name ones, struggle with the subtle nuances of social media. Believe it or not, there’s a method to the madness of tweeting and I’m here to share a few of my tips, tricks and secrets to help you maximize your word count … and get the best experience out of the silly little app that can not only translate into followers, but bookings, fans and money.
Do Talk to Your Fans!
This is the simplest and most important piece of advice: Not every single tweet you receive deserves a response. You are under no obligation or required to respond to anyone you don’t want to. Very quickly, you’ll recognize fans/supporters who continuously support, promote and pay for your content. A simple “thanks” or “how’s your day” can go a long way. There is a down side to fan interaction: everyone will expect one. It’s completely up to you whom you choose to interact with and for however long you choose to do so.
Don't Give Away Anything for Free!
Far too often, I open up Twitter and see performers posting two-minute long clips of them getting fucked with semen dripping out of them. While posting such sexy content can be a great way to showcase your sexuality, it also is giving away a commodity for free. Our business is in an age where fans rarely if ever pay for their porn. I post occasional nudity to entice sign-ups for my personal content sites and only retweet or provide links to any new scenes of mine that have been recently released. Keep your product and content special to drive up a demand for it.
Do Showcase Your Personality!
Everyone knows you suck, fuck, lick and stick. What they don’t know is: Do you like to read in the bathtub? What song gets you hyped if you’re feeling down? What’s your go-to junk food when you feel like pigging out? Although these little bits of knowledge seem trivial and superfluous, they help “humanize” you as a person, not just a porn performer, cam model or clip artist. You can share tidbits of your life without oversharing and blurring those lines between fantasy and reality.
Don't Feed the Trolls!
Too often, I see performers get sucked into the abyss of other accounts instigating fights. Sadly, not everyone supports sex and its workers and will sometimes attack performers out of the blue simply because they don’t agree with a performer’s chosen profession. It can be tempting to “tell them off” but at the end of the day, you’re giving your time, energy and thoughts to someone who does not deserve it. Remember: negative attention is still attention, and that’s what they want from you. Deny them that and you win.
These tips seem obvious and for the most part, they are. At the end of the day just ask yourself, “Would I follow myself on Twitter?” If the answer is “no,” ask yourself why that is. The beauty of this business is that it is fantasy-based. You can change, morph, evolve and grow to be anything or anyone you want to be. Your imagination is the limit, and imaginations are limitless. Now go log on to Twitter and make me proud.
