Move Over: jQuery Reportedly Overtakes Flash

A recent report by jQuery support, training and consulting firm, appendTo, reveals that the percentage of websites using jQuery has surpassed the percentage of websites with Adobe Flash deployed.

The report is based on statistics compiled by HTTP Archive (https://httparchive.org), which show that 48 percent of sites use jQuery, versus the 47 percent which use Flash. The HTTP Archive monitors the world’s 17,000 most popular websites, including the Alexa 500, Alexa U.S. 500, Alexa 10,000, Fortune 500, Global 500 and Quantcast10K.

More and more website developers are choosing jQuery and JavaScript over Flash.

According to Mike Hostetler, co-founder and CEO of appendTo, developers are choosing jQuery over Flash for new development because of its ease of use, along with the fact that it is open source instead of a proprietary solution, such as Adobe’s Flash.

“This data confirms a trend that’s been a couple years in the making. Hostetler stated. “More and more website developers are choosing jQuery and JavaScript over Flash.”

“jQuery has been the leading JavaScript library, by far, for a quite a while,” notes Jonathan Sharp, co-founder and president of appendTo. “Now that it has eclipsed Flash, it is also the leading tool for creating interactive websites.”

“It just works,” Sharp added. “jQuery works without the developer having to conduct additional testing to work around individual browser problems. Additionally jQuery is HTML5 ready and can be leveraged to innovate in that space.”
